How to Transplant Tomato Seedlings: A Fun Kids Gardening Activity
Just three days after planting our tomato seeds, they sprouted! That was a joyful day in our household as our daughter could hardly contain her excitement. Watching those first green shoots emerge from the soil sparked a sense of wonder that only gardening can bring.
She took her role as plant caretaker seriously, carefully watering the sprouts every morning and evening. In Malaysia’s warm tropical climate (typically 24-32°C with high humidity), seedlings grow quickly, and she was eagerly waiting for the day when the sprouts were finally ready to be transplanted into their permanent home.
When to Transplant Tomato Seedlings

When the sprouts were about a week old and had developed their first true leaves, we decided to move them into their permanent growing place. This is the ideal time for transplanting tomato seedlings – they’re strong enough to handle but still young enough to adapt easily to their new environment.
We have a veg trug planter box on our balcony, which is perfect for urban vegetable gardening, but any pot or container that can hold enough soil and has proper drainage will work well for growing tomatoes.
Choosing the Right Soil for Transplanting
We filled our Vegtrug with BioChar Soil Mix 2, a premium growing medium formulated by Dr Francis Ng, the creator of the renowned 1 Utama Secret Garden.
BioChar Soil Mix 2 offers several advantages for balcony gardeners in Malaysia’s tropical climate:
- Lightweight composition: Mostly carbon-based, making it easy to carry upstairs to apartments and lift into elevated planters
- All-in-one formula: No need to mix with other products – it’s ready to use straight from the bag
- Dual-purpose: Perfect for both seed germination and transplanting seedlings
- Moisture retention: Holds water well in our humid climate while maintaining good drainage
- Clean handling: Non-sticky texture makes it ideal for kids’ gardening activities
Step-by-Step: Transplanting Tomato Seedlings with Kids

Once we had the BioChar Soil Mix in the planter box, we were ready to begin the transplanting process. This is where the real fun begins for children!
Preparing the Seedlings
We carefully removed the sprouts from the egg carton we used for germination. Handle seedlings gently by their leaves, never by the delicate stems, to avoid damaging them.
Getting Kids Involved Safely
Our daughter needed a little step to stand on to reach the planter box comfortably. Since the Vegtrug is sturdy and stable, she was safe to work at the perfect height. Always supervise children during gardening activities and ensure they have stable footing.
The Planting Process
We let her take charge of several important tasks:
- Digging holes: She used her hands to create small planting holes in the soil, spacing them about 30-40cm apart for tomatoes
- Pre-watering: She poured water into each hole before planting – this ensures the roots have immediate access to moisture
- Placing seedlings: Together, we gently placed each tomato plant into its hole
- Covering roots: She was in charge of carefully covering the roots with soil, patting it down gently
She absolutely loved getting her hands dirty and playing with the soil! The sensory experience of gardening is wonderful for children’s development. Fortunately, BioChar Soil Mix 2’s non-sticky texture made it very easy to clean her hands afterwards – a big plus for parents!
Feeding Your Transplanted Tomato Seedlings
After the plants were established in their new home, we applied AgroMarine Hydrolysed Fish Fertiliser to provide 100% organic plant nutrients.
Here’s how we applied it:
- Mixed 10ml of fertiliser with a full watering can of water
- Drenched the soil thoroughly with the solution
- Applied in the early morning to avoid the hot midday sun
Important Safety Note: While this is an organic fertiliser, always observe a strict 7-day withholding period between fertiliser application and harvesting any edible produce. “Organic” refers to material origin (plant/animal sources) and does not mean the product is safe to ingest. Always wash harvested vegetables thoroughly before consumption.
What to Expect After Transplanting
Now we’re watching the tomato plants settle into their new environment and grow stronger each day. In Malaysia’s tropical climate with consistent warmth and humidity, tomato plants typically:
- Develop more leaves within 5-7 days after transplanting
- Grow taller and bushier over the next 2-3 weeks
- Begin flowering approximately 4-6 weeks after transplanting
- Produce fruits 60-80 days after transplanting, depending on the variety
We can’t wait for the flowers and fruits to appear! Our daughter checks on her tomato plants every day, and the anticipation is building.

Frequently Asked Questions About Transplanting Tomato Seedlings
When should I transplant tomato seedlings?
Transplant tomato seedlings when they are about one week old after germination and have developed their first true leaves. They should be strong enough to handle without breaking. In Malaysia’s warm climate, this typically happens faster than in temperate regions.
What soil is best for transplanting tomato seedlings in Malaysia?
BioChar Soil Mix 2 is ideal for transplanting tomato seedlings in Malaysia’s tropical climate. It’s lightweight, carbon-rich, retains moisture well in high humidity, and doesn’t require mixing with other products. This makes it perfect for balcony gardens and urban farming.
How do I fertilise newly transplanted tomato seedlings?
Use organic fertiliser like AgroMarine Hydrolysed Fish Fertiliser by mixing 10ml with a watering can of water and drenching the soil. This provides 100% organic nutrients without harsh chemicals. Remember to observe a 7-day withholding period before harvesting any edible produce, and always wash vegetables thoroughly before consumption.
Is transplanting tomato seedlings safe for kids to help with?
Yes, transplanting seedlings is an excellent hands-on gardening activity for children. Let them dig holes, pour water, and cover roots with soil under supervision. BioChar Soil Mix 2 is not sticky, making cleanup easy. Always supervise children during gardening activities and ensure they wash their hands thoroughly afterwards.
Can I grow tomatoes in a balcony garden in Malaysia?
Absolutely! Tomatoes grow well in Malaysian balcony gardens with adequate sunlight (6-8 hours daily). Use planter boxes or large pots (minimum 30cm deep) with good drainage, quality soil like BioChar Soil Mix, and regular organic fertilisation for best results in our tropical climate. Choose heat-tolerant varieties for optimal success.
How often should I water transplanted tomato seedlings?
In Malaysia’s hot, humid climate, water transplanted tomato seedlings once daily in the early morning or late evening. Check soil moisture by inserting your finger 2-3cm deep – if it feels dry, water thoroughly. During particularly hot days or if plants show wilting, you may need to water twice daily. Ensure pots have good drainage to prevent root rot.
