Wormy, your Nature Squad guide

Leaves and fruit peels do not stay the same forever. Tiny living things break down suitable organic material over time.

A home compost heap needs a balance of moist green materials and drier brown materials, air and water. A grown-up should manage what goes in and keep it away from pests.

Finished compost can be added to soil to improve its structure. It is different from a bag of seed-starting mix, which is specially made for young seedlings.

Try it: sort picture cards into compostable, recyclable and rubbish groups. Check local recycling rules with an adult before sorting real waste.
