A sunflower growing in the sunshine

You will need

  • Sunflower seeds (choose a dwarf variety for a container)
  • Pot with drainage holes and a saucer
  • Suitable seed-starting mix
  • Small watering can
  • Plant label and pencil
  • Notebook or paper

With a grown-up, choose a sunny place and a pot with drainage holes. Check the seed packet for variety and sowing directions.
Fill the pot with suitable seed-starting mix and place it on a saucer.
Sow at the depth printed on the packet. Cover gently and label the pot with the date.
Water gently until moist. Check regularly and water when the surface begins to dry, without leaving standing water.
Watch for a sprout and draw it. If several seedlings grow together, ask a grown-up to leave enough room for the strongest.
Keep the plant in a sunny place. Follow the packet’s advice for container size and support. Record when the flower opens.
