A seed holds a tiny young plant and a supply of food. Its coat helps protect it until conditions are right.

When a seed takes in water, its coat can split. A small root usually grows first. The root anchors the seedling and starts taking in water.

Next a shoot grows upwards. Leaves open and use light to help the growing plant make food.

Try it: with a grown-up, place two beans against a damp paper towel in a clear jar. Look each day and draw what appeared first. Do not eat experiment beans.
