You will need

  • A clean, clear reusable plastic jar or cup
  • 2 or 3 untreated dried bean seeds
  • Paper towel
  • Water
  • A marker and a notebook
  1. Ask a grown-up to help clean and dry a clear reusable jar or cup.
  2. Fold a paper towel and dampen it with water. It should feel moist, with no puddle at the bottom.
  3. Place two or three untreated bean seeds between the towel and the side of the jar so you can see them.
  4. Put the jar in a bright, warm place away from strong midday sun. Check every day and add a little water if the towel begins to dry.
  5. Look for a tiny root first, then a shoot. Draw what changes each day in your notebook.
  6. When the seedling has leaves, ask a grown-up to help move it gently into a pot with suitable seed-starting mix and drainage.
